The Sustainable Cabin Project
The Sustainable Cabin Project is a unique partnership between Green Island Getaways, UPEI Engineering and Holland College. The project offers students the opportunity to design and build LEED for Homes certified cabins that will be used as vacation rental properties. The cabins will be located in North Granville, PE on a property owned and operated by Green Island Getaways.
The Sustainable Cabin Project began as a design competition between two teams of UPEI Engineering students. The teams were instructed to produce project briefs for a cabin that has a footprint of approximately 350 sq. ft. The cabins are designed for all season occupancy and will implement and showcase a variety of technologies. Importance was placed on both sustainable building practices and sustainable material sourcing. Students were encouraged to engage lecturers, tutors from Holland College and those in the industry for information. ThermalWise presented as part of the students’ design lab.
Three students are continuing work on the design of the cabins for the summer. Six cabins will be constructed both by Holland College and industry partners. Construction will begin in September. The program will be continued in the following years.
