Project Team: Green Island Getaways, University of Prince Edward Island Engineering, Holland College
Location: North Granville, PEI
Project Description: The Sustainable Cabin Project was a unique partnership between Green Island Getaways, UPEI Engineering and Holland College. The project offered students the opportunity to design and build LEED for Homes certified cabins that would be used as vacation rental properties. The first two cabins certified at LEED Silver and are located in North Granville, PEI, on a property owned and operated by Green Island Getaways.
The Sustainable Cabin Project began as a design competition between two teams of UPEI Engineering students. The teams were instructed to produce project briefs for a cabin with a footprint of approximately 350 sq. ft. The cabins were to be designed for all-season occupancy, implementing and showcasing a variety of technologies. Emphasis was placed on both sustainable building practices and sustainable material sourcing. Students were encouraged to engage lecturers, tutors from Holland College, and industry professionals for information.
ThermalWise facilitated part of the students' design lab and worked with Holland College construction teams. ThermalWise also carried out LEED Provider services, including on-site verification and testing.
