McLean/McCulloch Residence

Located in Tatamagouche, NS, this home demonstrates an interesting combination of construction methods. Built by the owner, the home is balloon framed with rough sawn FSC-certified lumber. The framing cavities have been filled with cellulose insulation and then the builder has laid straw on-edge inside of the framed exterior walls. This construction method results in a very well insulated building envelope. The home has been designed to collect rain water for use as potable water inside. It also has a solar thermal panel to pre-heat domestic hot water.
