Vivian Loftness’s presentation was one of the highlights of the CaGBC National Conference. Loftness, a Professor of Architecture at Carnegie Mellon University, presented to a morning breakfast crowd about the large role the built environment plays in climate change. She then spoke about opportunities and strategies that can be implemented to address this fact.
The concept of “environmental coasting” was at the centre of Loftness’s presentation. Preferring this term over “passive design,” Loftness suggested that designers can make substantial improvements in building performance if they design with regional environments in mind. Here’s a link to a video of a presentation Loftness gave at a TEDx event in Pittsburgh.
